Gov't-Issued NK Airspace Ban to Remain

The government will reportedly continue to ban South Korean private aircraft from passing through North Korean airspace for the time being.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Friday that it will keep the ban in place even after a joint South Korea-U.S. military drill ends on Friday. Earlier this month, Pyongyang announced that it could not ensure the safety of South Korean civil airliners flying in or around its airspace in the East Sea, taking issue with the annual military exercises.

A ministry official said South Korean civil airliners will continue to take detours and avoid passing through the North’s airspace until the North withdraws its initial statement regarding the safety of South Korean aircraft.

The ministry’s decision also comes as a result of an announcement by the North in which it said it will launch a rocket some time between April fourth and eighth.
