Gov’t Mulls Fully Joining PSI

The government is considering becoming a full member of the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).

Foreign Ministry spokesman Moon Tae-young told a regular briefing Monday that South Korea is considering joining the anti-proliferation initiative in preparation for North Korea’s rocket launch planned for early April.

On Friday, Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan told reporters that Seoul will consider adopting all of the PSI initiatives if the North goes ahead with its planned missile launch.

The spokesman said discussions are already under way on Seoul’s membership in the PSI.

The PSI program aims to prevent proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Seoul has subscribed to five of the eight PSI initiatives as an observer since 2005.
