KOWOC announces plans for world cup cultural event May 30

The Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup (KOWOC) said Monday...a live concert and events highlighting the colorful diversity of the 32 countries taking part in this year's World Cup, will be show-cased in the festivities on the eve of the May 31 kick-off. Executive director for KOWOC's Cultural Event Organizing Office... said Lee Tae-haeng, that world renowned soprano Jo Su-mi and Italian tenor Andrea Bochelli will take part in the two-hour gala at the Peace Park outside the Seoul World Cup stadium in western Seoul, May 30. The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kwak Seung, will also be on hand. Jo is one of Korea's most recognized sopranos, while Bochelli is a top name in classical music worldwide and an enthusiastic soccer fan despite suffering from visual impairment. Bochelli actually contacted KOWOC to offer his services, expressing that it would be a great honor to sing at the ceremony on the eve of the World Cup. Lee said that in addition to the performance by the two singers, spectators will be able to listen to the classical harmony of the Ahn Trio chamber music ensemble. The Korean group, made up of three sisters, Angella, Lucia, and Maria, have won numerous prizes in the chamber music field.
