Japan Requests UN Security Council Meeting

Japan has condemned North Korea’s launch of a rocket and seeks an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura on Sunday told an emergency news briefing that even if it was a satellite launch, it violates U.N. Resolution 1718, which requires a halt to all of North Korea's ballistic missile activities.

Kawamura said the North’s rocket was launched at 11:30 a.m. and the first rocket booster appeared to drop into the East Sea about 280 kilometers west of Japan's Akita Prefecture. He said the second booster appeared to fall into the Pacific Ocean 1,270 kilometers east of Japan.

Kawamura also said Tokyo has no information on the rocket debris, adding that his government is continuing efforts to find debris around the areas where the rocket boosters might have fallen.
