North Jeolla Province has submitted its application to include five historic locations in the nation for the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

The application included a historic zone in Iksan, the Beokgolje Reservoir in Gimje, Mount Mai in Jinan, Mount Seonun and its Buddhist temple in Gochang and Doyoji Furnace in Busan.

As the preparatory step for inclusion on the World Heritage List, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO must first recognize the value of the sites by including them in its tentative list.

North Jeolla projected high possibilities for the historic zone in Iksan and the Beokgolje Reservoir to be put on the nation’s list.

Iksan has abundant remains from the ancient Mahan and Baekje dynasties. It was designated as an ancient city in 2004 according to special legislation to preserve the sites of ancient cities.

Beokgolje is the remains of a water reservoir built around 330 A.D. It is considered one of the oldest and largest water storage facilities.
