North Korea has announced that it will never return to the six-party nuclear talks in protest of the U.N. Security Council’s adoption of a presidential statement condemning its rocket launch.
The North’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it will no longer be bound by any agreements reached in the six-way dialogue framework.
In the statement issued through the state-run Korean Central News Agency, the North said it will reprocess nuclear fuel rods spent at its Yongbyon nuclear site as part of a plan to restart its nuclear facilities.
North Korea had been, up until now, in the process of disabling its nuclear facilities under six-way denuclearization agreements.
The North also pledged to strengthen what it called its “nuclear deterrent for self-defense.”
Pyongyang hinted in the statement that it will continue to test-fire long-range rockets, saying it will exercise its right to develop space based on international pacts like the Outer Space Treaty.
The statement said the North will also actively consider building light water nuclear reactors.
