Design for King Sejong Statue Selected

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has unveiled the design for a statue of King Sejong the Great, which will be put on display in Gwanghwamun Plaza.

The city government selected sculptor Kim Young-won's work entitled "Deep-rooted Tree, King Sejong the Great" for the statue.

The seated Sejong will have opened arms to demonstrate the king’s focus on communicating with the people.

A book held in one hand will depict Sejong's outstanding contribution to the development of the nation’s culture through the invention of “hangeul,” or the Korean alphabet.

The statue and base will be a combined height of nine-point-five meters.

Replicas of the king's other inventions will be on display in front of the statue.
