Seoul Officials Arrive in Gaeseong for Meeting with NK

A delegation of South Korean officials has arrived in Gaeseong for a meeting with North Korean officials.

The seven-member delegation, led by Gaeseong Industrial Complex Director General Kim Young-tak, crossed the inter-Korean border via an overland route on Tuesday morning.

During the talks, the South’s delegation is expected to demand the immediate release of a South Korean worker detained by the North and propose ways to secure the safety of South Korean workers in the industrial park.

In the event the North raises issue with Seoul’s plan to join the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), South Korean officials are expected to make clear that the issue is separate from inter-Korean affairs.

Seoul plans to focus on abiding by its principles while seeking not to further strain inter-Korean relations amid the possibility that the North could threaten to shut down the Gaeseong industrial park in protest of Seoul’s plan to join the PSI.

North Korea proposed the meeting last Thursday, saying that “a matter of grave importance” must be discussed with the South.

Chief delegate Kim is scheduled to disclose the results of the inter-Korean meeting later in the day at the Central Government Complex in Seoul.

This is the first time South Korean officials have crossed the border into the North for a meeting with North Korean officials since the launch of the Lee Myung-bak administration.
