NK Threatens to Boost Nuclear Deterrent

North Korea is threatening to further strengthen its nuclear deterrent in protest of a recent remark by the commander of U.S. forces in South Korea.

The North’s Committee for Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland issued the threat in a statement Monday in response to General Walter Sharp’s remarks last week.

The statement harshly criticized Sharp’s remarks, likening his comments to a declaration that the U.S. will conduct a preemptive nuclear strike against the North.

On Wednesday, Sharp said the U.S. forces and South Korean allies are ready to respond to any potential emergencies arising in North Korea.

During a speech at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he said the U.S. and South Korea will be combat-ready according to operation plans 5027 and 5029.
