Red Cross Mulls Gene Bank for Separated Families

South Korea’s Red Cross says it is considering setting up a gene bank which would allow people with separated families in North Korea to identify and verify their relations even after death.

Kim Young-chul, secretary general of the Korea National Red Cross, said the organization’s move comes as last year alone, over five-thousand South Korean senior citizens with families in the North died.

Kim said the Red Cross is also considering helping the seniors make videos containing their farewells and wills to their families in the North.

Kim said the Red Cross has proposed the plan to the Unification Ministry which is positively considering it.

The Red Cross is also seeking to expand welfare support for about five percent of some 90-thousand first generation South Koreans with separated families, who either live alone or in poor conditions.
