2002 Culture Korea will begin in Paris from May

The event's organizers said Monday that the exhibition "2002 Culture Korea" will run in Paris from May 22 to June 4 to bring Korean traditional arts and crafts to Europe's attention. The Korea Folklore Industrial Arts Promotion Association (KFIAPA) said the exhibition, to be sponsored by the Korea National Tourism Organization(KNTO), is the first of its kind to be held in Paris. Artworks to be displayed include lacquer ware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, knot work, metalwork, and ceramics. Visitors can watch Korean masters demonstrate how to produce bamboo ware and other handicrafts and also play traditional musical instruments. In addition, they can enjoy performances such as Korean traditional dance, samulnori (percussion quartet music) and the Korean martial art of taekwondo. After the shows, spectators can satisfy their hunger for things Korean with traditional foods and a walk along Korean-style streets where they may buy folk craft and mementos of the 2002 World Cup finals co-hosted by Korea and Japan. The association chief, Ha Jong-cheol said that the coming exhibition is a good opportunity to show the superiority of Korean industrial arts to the world. He said...the focus is how to create a harmony between those traditional works and performances at the exhibition.
