The Ministry of Justice said Tuesday the government will grant a maximum one-year moratorium on deportation if illegal immigrants report to the authorities voluntarily. In a ministerial-level meeting convened Monday, the government decided to dispense with criminal prosecution for illegal immigrants and allow them to stay until March 2003, providing they report their residence during a two-month period from March 25th. The ministry said the non-prosecution privilege also applies to firms employing illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, entry bans on foreigners violating employment-related laws will be extended to five years from the current 12 months. Visa inspections will become more stringent for students, tourists, family visitors and especially female foreigners looking for work in bars and hotels.
