A South Korean clothing company at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea has decided to withdraw from the industrial park.
The Unification Ministry said Tuesday that the clothing firm has notified the South’s Gaeseong park management committee of its decision to close its plant in the North Korean border city.
The firm entered the jointly operated South-North business park in April 2007 and, at one point, employed as many as 100 North Koreans.
The company’s decision comes after a series of orders were canceled amid strained inter-Korean ties and concerns over the safety of its South Korean staff.
Currently, a total of 106 South Korean firms are operating at the Gaeseong park. But a growing number of firms have canceled contracts to enter into the industrial complex.
Concerns are mounting that more companies could pull out in the event an inter-Korean working-level meeting set to open on Thursday yields negative results.
