107th inter-parliamentary conference opens in Marrakech

The 107th conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) opened here Sunday evening. Lawmakers from more than 100 countries will discuss the general political, economic and social situation worldwide, the role of parliaments in developing public policy in an era of globalization, multilateral institutions and international trade agreements and global degradation of the environment and parliamentary support for the Kyoto Protocol. The South Korean delegation includes National Assembly Speaker Lee Man-sup, Rep. Kang Wun-tae and Yoo Jay-kun from the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), Rep. Chung Jey-moon, Lee Jai-chang and Lee Yun-sook from the Grand National Party (GNP), Rep. Lee Yang-hee from the United Liberal Democrats (ULD) and National Assembly Secretary General Kim Byeong-oh. In a meeting with Moroccan King Mohamed VI held immediately after the opening ceremony, National Assembly Speaker Lee asked for support to be given to South Korean firms looking to participate in the construction of three planned soccer stadiums in the North African country, which is bidding to host the 2010 World Cup. Speaker Lee also met Russia's Chairman of the Federation Council Mironov Sergei to discuss mutual economic and business-related interests.
