North Korea has demanded a wage increase for its workers at the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex in the North.
The demand was made during a meeting between the two Koreas in the North Korean border city of Gaeseong on Thursday.
Unification Ministry sources said the North demanded South Korean companies operating in the business park pay North Korean workers a monthly salary of 300 U.S. dollars and guarantee a ten to 20 percent average annual pay hike.
The North also demanded the South pay five hundred million dollars in land use fees Pyongyang says is owed to the North.
The South Korean delegation is said to have demanded the North swiftly release a Hyundai Asan employee it detained for allegedly denouncing the Pyongyang regime. The North’s response to the demand is not yet known.
Unification Ministry officials said the two sides have agreed to hold a third round of working-level talks on June 19th to continue negotiations.
