The Unification Ministry says President Lee Myung-bak stressed Tuesday that North Korea should refrain from making excessive demands in regards to the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex in the North.
Ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-joo told a news briefing on Wednesday that the Seoul government's stance remains unchanged that it seeks stable development of the complex.
The president told a joint news conference Tuesday after a summit with U.S. President Barack Obama that Seoul would not accept outrageous demands by North Korea regarding operations at the industrial park.
The president added that his administration has yet to decide what course of action it will take in the event Pyongyang continues to pursue what he called “excessively outrageous demands.”
Last week, North Korea demanded South Korean firms operating in the park increase monthly wages for its workers by four times to 300 U.S. dollars.
The North also requested the South pay 500 million dollars in land-use fees for the Gaeseong business sites. The amount, which would cover rental fees for the next 50 years, is 31 times the amount stipulated in the original contract.
