Teachers Issue Anti-Gov't Statement

Some 16-thousand South Korean teachers have issued a statement demanding changes to government policies.

Releasing the statement in downtown Seoul on Thursday, the Korean Teachers and Education Workers' Union said Thursday that the government's abuse of public power is violating freedom of speech and is reminiscent of past military dictatorships. The teachers called for a government apology and reforms.

The left-leaning association also rejected the Education Ministry's position that by signing the statement, the teachers are violating the public servants law that prohibits public officials from partaking in political activity. The teachers' union said that simply signing a statement does not constitute "political activity."

A collision is expected between the two sides as the ministry warned it would sternly respond to those who violate the law by signing the statement.
