World Heritage Cmte to Decide on Korean Tombs

The 33rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee opened in Seville, Spain, on Monday.

The meeting will determine whether a group of royal tombs of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty merits the world heritage site designation.

During the session, which will last through June 30th, heritage designation decisions will be made on 30 cultural, natural or combined heritage candidate sites applied for by countries around the world.

The Cultural Heritage Administration in Seoul expects the session to approve Korea’s application as the International Council on Monuments and Sites, an advisory agency to UNESCO, has already recommended the Joseon tombs for designation.

The decision on the tombs will come Friday or Saturday.
