Organizers for the event said Friday...the opening ceremony of the FIFA 2002 World Cup promises to be a merging of technology and beauty. Cheil Communications Inc. and Diamond AD, which had been given the job of orchestrating the event that will take place May 31 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, stressed that the ceremony will be more than a show, it will be a medium to instill a positive image of Korea and its technological prowess. Lee Do-hoon of Cheil said...since they believe that the world received a taste of Korean culture at the 1988 Olympic Games, they intend to diversify our efforts in other areas this time. Lee, who is the chief coordinator for the more than 20 special task forces from the two companies, stressed that the ceremony was being conducted exclusively by the private sector, and will focus on advertising the "Korea Brand" to the world. He said that though there were some initial controversies, designers have settled on the image of high-tech and information technology (IT) that befits the first World Cup of the 21st century. Lee added that the games will provide an ideal environment to show the world Korea's strength and competitiveness in the IT sector. Cheil and Diamond are, in addition, coordinating their efforts with soccer's world governing body, FIFA, and the Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 World Cup (KOWOC).
