NK Freighter Sailing Northward in Yellow Sea

A North Korean ship suspected of carrying illicit weapons has reportedly changed course and is now heading northward in the Yellow Sea. The Kang Nam was previously thought to be heading to Myanmar.

A South Korean government source said Sunday that it believes the freighter is traveling northward about 200 kilometers west of Anma Islands off Yeonggwang County in South Jeolla Province.

It said the ship will likely enter North Korean waters around 10 a.m. Monday.

As the two-thousand-ton ship is sailing in international waters only 20 kilometers South Korea’s military operation area, Seoul is closely watching the ship’s movements should it enter the military zone.

The Kang Nam has been at sea for two weeks since setting sail from the North Korean port of Nampo on June 17th. Its movements have been closely monitored by U.S. naval forces.
