Gov't Urges NK Detainee's Release on 100th Day

Tuesday marks the one hundredth day since North Korea detained a South Korean man known by his surname "Yoo" who worked at the inter-Korean industrial complex in Gaeseong, North Korea.

In a Monday briefing, Unification Ministry spokesman Chun Hae-sung once again urged Pyongyang to guarantee basic rights for Yoo based on a South-North agreement on cross-border travels to the North's Gaeseong and Mount Geumgang tourist areas. He also called for Yoo’s immediate release.

The Hyundai Asan employee was detained March 30th on charges that he denounced the North Korean regime and incited a female North Korean worker to defect to the South.

The spokesman said the government will keep in contact with the North in order to schedule further talks, but for now, Seoul does not plan to propose the next round of talks.
