Champion Climber Goes Missing in Himalayas

Climber Ko Mi-young has been confirmed missing while descending a mountain in the Himalayas.

Her team members said she fell off a 6,200-meter high cliff while making her descent around 10:30 p.m. Saturday Korean Standard Time. The depth of the ravine into which Ko fell is estimated an 1,500 to 2,000 meters.

Ko, 41, had conquered the ninth-highest Himalayan peak Saturday.

Fellow climbers at the base camp and Ko's rival Oh Eun-sun joined a search and rescue operation.

Ko is one of the few female climbers to conquer the 8,126-meter Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest peak among the 14 tallest Himalayan mountains.
