South Korea finished with three gold medals to rank fourth at the 2009 International Mathematical Olympiad, which ended in Bremen, Germany, on Monday.

South Korean students also came in second on Sunday at this year's International Physics Olympiad in Mexico.

The Education Ministry said that earlier in the year, South Korean students took sixth place at the 2009 International Biology Olympiad held in Japan.

The three olympiads and six more in other fields of science form the International Science Olympiad.

The annual academic competitions are for high school students under 20 years of age.

South Korea will compete in five more olympiads by the end of this year.
