A team of South Korean scientists has developed the world's first nano-sized lens that can help obtain vivid, highly improved images of objects.
The Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) team, led by professor Kim Kwang-soo, announced it has succeeded in developing the nano-sized lens, using organic molecules called calyx hydroquinone (CHQ).
The results of the research have been published in the latest issue of the science journal Nature.
The lead researcher said CHQ turns itself into cup-shaped nano-lenses when placed on a surface, adding that the lens' short focal length will improve magnification sharply enough to view objects that cannot be resolved with conventional optical lenses.
The lens will likely have diverse applications, as it will allow scientists to view and understand the fine structure of small objects and provide data on optical patterns needed to develop nano devices.
