Foreign soccer teams to play in Korea during this summer's soccer World Cup will be cheered by groups of Korean supporters organized by the government. The government recently named the leaders of 45 support groups to be launched in 10 World Cup host cities that will cheer 15 foreign national soccer teams to play in Korea during the 32-team tournament that South Korea will co-host with Japan from May 31-June 30. Officials said each of the supporter groups, dubbed "Citizens' Supporter Squads," will be comprised of some 500-1,000 people. The government will offer the groups a total of about $1.1 million dollars in financial assistance to help them buy World Cup tickets and finance other expenses. The government held a meeting Tuesday for supporter group leaders at the Seoul World Cup Stadium to brief them on their intended activities, that will include offering tourist information to foreigners.
