Hyundai Chief Seeks Release of Detained Employee in NK

Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun has arrived in North Korea to negotiate the release of a detained Hyundai Asan worker.

Hyun entered the communist state on Monday after crossing the border via the immigration office at the South’s Dorasan Station.

Before her departure, Hyun told reporters that she will work to win the freedom of the Hyundai Asan worker, identified by his surname Yoo, who has been detained in the communist state for more than 130 days.

Hyun said she has yet to decide whether she will seek a resumption to the stalled Mount Geumgang tours that were halted last summer following the killing of a South Korean tourist by a North Korean soldier at the mountain resort.

Hyun is scheduled to stay in the North until Wednesday. There are reports that the chairwoman could also meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
