Japanese Colonial War Diaries Disclosed

The Land Museum of Korea has disclosed records of the Japanese military during an uprising that occurred when the resistance was fierce against Japan's colonial rule in the early 20th century.

Marking the nation's Independence Day on August 15th, the museum disclosed 14 volumes of war diaries that describe the Japanese military’s clamp down of resistance movements that occurred in protest of Korean Emperor Gojong's forced abdication of the throne and the disbandment of the military.

The records of over 24-hundred pages from July 23rd, 1907 to June 19th, 1909 contain detailed activities of Japan's 14th infantry regiment dispatched specifically to contain the uprising.

In particular, the diaries include accounts of Japanese brutality as it describes a massacre of civilians who helped militia leader Lee Gang-nuyeon, during a battle in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province in September 1907.
