NK, Hyundai Agree to Resume Geumgang Tours

North Korea and Hyundai Group have agreed to resume stalled tours to the North and normalize inter-Korean border crossings.

The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said Monday that Hyundai Group and the North’s Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee reached a five-point agreement on inter-Korean business projects.

The agreement came after North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun held talks in Pyongyang on Sunday.

As part of the agreement, Hyundai Asan, the group’s North Korea business venture, will resume tours to the North’s Mount Geugmang resort and the North will provide all necessary safety guarantees for South Korean tourists.

Hyundai Asan will also resume tours to the North’s border city of Gaeseong and launch tours to Mount Baekdu.

The North agreed to lift restrictions on border crossings for South Korean businesspeople and their stays in the inter-Korean business park.

North Korea also agreed to host reunions for members of families separated between the two Koreas during the upcoming Chuseok holidays.
