Korean short track skater, Kim Dong-sung swept six golds at the 2002 short-track speed skating World Championships in Montreal, Canada. It is the first time for a male short track skater to win all the races in the World Championship. The gold medal comes with greater significance to Kim as many remember his controversial disqualification at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. In the 1997 championships, he only won the 1,000 and 3,000 meters. World speed skating stars Apollo Anton, Li Jia Jun and Mark Genyong of Canada did not participate in the championships citing lack of preparation. Regarding this, Kim said he has devoted himself to practice without rest since the 2002 Winter Olympics, and while it was true he was not a medallist there due to what he felt was a problem in judging, and many rivals were not participating, he would garner more gold medal to repay the expectations of people at home.
