Koreas at Odds over Date, Venue for Family Reunions

Red Cross officials from South and North Korea have agreed to hold family reunions for separated families around the Chuseok holidays but are at odds over the exact dates and the venue for the reunions.

During the first full session of their meetings in Mount Geumgang on Wednesday, the officials agreed to hold the family reunions around the Chuseok holidays in early October and to select around 100 members of separated families from each side for the reunions.

The South’s delegation proposed that the family reunions open on two occasions, September 27th and October sixth, with each reunion lasting for three days. However, the North’s delegation suggested the reunions start on the official Chuseok holiday of October third for three days.

South Korean officials also proposed that group reunions take place at a permanent family reunion center at Mount Geumgang and individual reunions at a hotel. The North rejected the idea of holding reunions at the Geumgang center.

During a meeting held after the full session, the South’s delegation laid out three principles on addressing issues related to separated families: respecting humanitarianism, identifying whether separated family members are dead or alive and resolving issues regarding South Koreans kidnapped or held as prisoners of war by the North.
