The South Korean fishing vessel 800 Yeonan and its four crew members have safely returned home after 30 days of detention in North Korea.
The ship had been detained July 30th when it accidentally crossed the Northern Limit Line, the de facto sea border between the two Koreas.
The Yeonan and its crew enter South Korean waters around 5 p.m. Saturday and reached the port of Sokcho three hours later.
The release follows that of the Hyundai Asan employee at the Kaesong industrial complex in the North who was earlier released after 136 days.
The South Korean Coast Guard ran a health check on the four fishermen immediately after their handover and found no particular problems.
The 29-ton squid-catching vessel had left the port of Geojin in Goseong, South Gyeongsang Province. The ship crossed 13 kilometers into North Korean waters while fishing northwest of Jejin, Gangwon Province, due to an error in its global positioning system.
The Yeonan was then detained by a North Korean patrol boat and brought to the North’s port of Jejin.
A Seoul official said their release was late but that the ship and crew were fortunately safely sent back on humanitarian grounds.
