Land travel to the North Korean border city of Gaeseong via the Gyeongui Highway was normalized Tuesday after Pyongyang agreed to lift the travel sanctions it unilaterally imposed in early December.
The Donghae Highway, for travel to the North’s Geumgang Mountain, can also be accessed any day with prior consent.
South Koreans had only been able to use the Gyeongui Highway at three set times between 9 and 11 a.m., from April through August, for visits to the North. This number has increased to 12 and the access times have been expanded. Returns from the North to the South, which had also been set at three specific times, have been raised to eleven.
The number of cross-border travel windows on Saturdays, which had been limited to three set times, has been increased to seven times in the morning and five times in the afternoon.
Restrictions on the number of passengers and cars have also been lifted, as has the restriction that a maximum of 880 South Koreans be allowed to stay at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex at any given time.
