Cross-border traffic between the two Koreas Tuesday remained similar to levels posted prior to North Korea's normalization of inter-Korean travel.
Tuesday was the first day land travel to the North Korean border city of Gaeseong via the Gyeongui Highway was normalized.
The Unification Ministry said Wednesday that 439 South Koreans crossed the border into the North at 8 a.m. Tuesday and that 278 South Koreans returned to the South around 5 p.m. The figures were similar to the numbers seen last week.
The ministry said the number of cross-border travelers didn’t experience much of an increase on Tuesday because South Korean firms operating at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex are still coordinating border-crossing schedules.
Starting Wednesday, the North will lift restrictions on the number of vehicles that can cross the border and the maximum number of people that can travel over the border at one time.
The ministry said the number of entries to and exits from the Mount Geumgang resort, which were also normalized Tuesday, are expected to rise soon.
