Seoul Seeks to Add Seoul Fortress to UNESCO List

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is seeking to have Seoul Fortress added to UNESCO’s world cultural heritage list.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon met on Thursday with Dinu Bumbaru, Canda’s representative to the International Council on Monuments and Sites on Thursday.

Oh told Bumbaru that the inclusion of Seoul Fortress, which has been surrounding the capital city for 514 years, on UNESCO’s heritage list would help Seoul become a recognized historical and cultural city.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to first request that the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea include the fortress on its tentative list in February. That list will then be submitted to UNESCO, which will decide in 2013 whether any new entries will be made to its world cultural heritage list.
