Cinemas Reap Records in August

Local cinemas brought in record profits last month thanks to the box office hits, “Haeundae” and “Take Off.”

The Korean Film Council said Monday that box office sales for last month stood at some 154 billion won, or around 124 million U.S. dollars. The figure broke the previous record of 137 billion won set in August 2007.

The council added that the number of August moviegoers surpassed 20 million for the first time in two years. The share of Korean films shown in theaters also surged to 67 percent last month.

The record figures are due to the popularity of the high-budget, disaster flick “Haeundae” and “Take Off,” which is based on a true story of the nation’s ski jumping team. The two movies topped the box office for six straight weeks after they hit theaters at the end of July.
