UNESCO to Recognize 5 S.Korean Intangible Cultural Properties

Five cultural properties belonging to South Korea are likely to be added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said Tuesday that a UNESCO heritage committee will meet in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday to decide which properties to add to the Representative List of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The cultural agency said the five properties, including the ancient dance “Gangangsullae,” are likely to be included on the UNESCO list, as the heritage committee has already accepted the recommendation for the South Korean properties’ registration during an advisory meeting.

Currently, there are three South Korean intangible cultural properties included on the UNESCO list: the royal ancestral ritual and music of Jongmyo Shrine, the traditional form of musical storytelling “Pansori,” and the Gangneung Danoje Festival.
