The government is planning to build a hospital in the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea for emergency medical care for South Korean workers.
According to Unification Ministry documents submitted to Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Mi-gyeong and disclosed during a parliamentary inquiry, the government plans to invest three-point-three billion won or about two-point-eight million U.S. dollars into the construction of the clinic by late next year.
The hospital will have ten sickbeds and will employ five doctors, six nurses, three medical engineers and two administrative employees.
The current hospital running in the Gaeseong complex was the result of a merger in April 2007 between two hospitals for South and North Korean workers, with the South's being run by the civic group “Green Doctors.”
The Unification Ministry says the current hospital run by volunteers has a limited workforce and facilities and fails to provide adequate medical service to the South Korean workers in the complex.
