The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is seeking to re-designate Hangeul Day as a national holiday.
The ministry said it made the request to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security on Wednesday.
Hangeul Day was removed from a list of national holidays in 1991. Revisions to laws regulating national holidays and holidays for public offices would be required, should Hangeul Day be re-designated.
Similar calls were made earlier in June during a meeting of the Presidential Council on National Competitiveness that was chaired by President Lee Myung-bak.
However, a decision on the matter is not expected to come easy, as the economic burden on the business sector and the potential economic benefits of the re-designation must be properly assessed.
Meanwhile, a survey conducted by the culture ministry on 15-hundred adults last month found that nearly 69 percent of respondents felt Hangeul Day should once again be designated as a national holiday.
