King Sejong Statue Unveiled

A ceremony unveiling the statue of King Sejong the Great was held Friday morning at downtown’s Gwanghwamun Square to celebrate the nation’s 563rd Hangeul Day.

The ceremony featured a traditional royal music performance, the screening of a video on how the statue was made and a number of celebratory speeches.

The statue is six-point-two meters high, four-point-three meters wide and weighs in at 20 tons. The statue shows Sejong holding a Hangeul instruction book in his left hand.

Seoul city has also installed replicas of Sejong's inventions around the statue, including a sun dial and rain gauge.

An exhibit on the king's life and accomplishments is on display in an underground hall beneath the statue.

King Sejong created the Korean Hangeul alphabet in the 15th century.
