The South Korean government has proposed that the two Koreas hold working-level talks in Gaeseong in North Korea on Wednesday to discuss the prevention of flooding on the Imjin River.
The Unification Ministry made the proposal in a phone call with the North on Monday morning.
Early last month, North Korea, without notice, discharged water from one of its dams on the Imjin River that runs across the border into the South, which resulted in a flood and the deaths of six South Koreans.
If North Korea accepts the proposal, the meeting will be the first contact between the governments of the two Koreas in three months since a meeting in Gaeseong in early July to discuss operations at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
Immediately after the six South Koreans died in the flash flood, the ministry said it would consider holding discussions with North Korea to prevent floods on rivers shared by the two Koreas.
