The two Koreas have begun working-level talks on the prevention of floods on rivers that run from the North into the South.
South Korea’s 16-member delegation arrived at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) border office on the Gyeongui Line railway at around 8:20 a.m. before crossing the military demarcation line to head for the meeting venue in the North’s border city of Gaeseong.
The South’s delegation is expected to demand that the North officially apologize for its discharge of water from one of its dams on the Imjin River early last month that resulted in a flash flood and the deaths of six South Koreans.
The South Korean officials will also seek ways to make mandatory the issuance of notices for possible river floods to prevent any recurrences similar to last month’s incident. The meeting will also focus on coming up with ways to jointly manage the Imjin River.
The South’s delegation is scheduled to return home around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
