Cheong Wa Dae announced Thursday South Korea's First Lady Lee Hee-ho will attend the U.N. Special Session on Children next month as chief government delegate. Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Park Sun-sook said Lee will visit the United States May 6-11, coupling her U.N. schedule with a trip to Vanderbilt University in Tennessee where she will receive a human rights award. Lee will participate in the U.N. Special Session May 8-10 and chair the session's opening where she will make a keynote speech calling for international efforts and cooperation to improve children's rights and welfare. President Kim Dae-jung was to attend the session but decided not to on advice from doctors after being hospitalized earlier this month for stomach problems and exhaustion. The first lady will join U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former South African President Nelson Mandela in the "Celebration of Leadership for Children," a ceremony during which they will receive a list of signatures collected from UNICEF's child protection campaign.
