53 Science-focused High Schools Named

The Education, Science and Technology Ministry has named 53 high schools to focus on science education.

Schools having at least four science labs and two math labs received the designation.

The science schools will receive subsidies of at least 20 million won, or 16-thousand-800 U.S. dollars, per class for three years or more. They are also eligible for teacher training, curricula development and consulting for opening new science courses.

The 53 schools are different from science specialty schools that provide an advanced level of science and math education.

The ministry says the new schools were designated among regular high schools and aim to foster students well versed in both humanities and science.
