Gov't Waiting for NK Response on Corn Aid Offer

The government says it is waiting on a response from North Korea on an offer Seoul made to send ten-thousand tons of corn aid to the impoverished North.

Unification Ministry deputy spokeswoman Lee Jong-joo told reporters Tuesday that the North has yet to respond to the offer Seoul issued on Monday.

She said, however, that she believes Pyongyang is likely to accept Seoul’s proposal, adding that working-level preparations for the provision of the aid are under way at South Korea’s Red Cross.

Lee said Seoul’s decision to provide corn to the North is being done completely from a humanitarian stance and that it is in no way related to any other situations between the two Koreas, including the North’s decision to host reunions of separated families.
