Guus Hiddink, the head coach of the Korean soccer squad, said Wednesday that his men will surprise the world at the upcoming FIFA championship. Speaking at a press conference at the Korea Football Association (KFA) headquarters in downtown Seoul, the Dutch-born leader said that with luck and support from from the people his players will likely shock soccer pundits in the 2002 World Cup. He said we know our 40-something standing in official soccer ratings, and that the three teams we will fight are rated higher than us, but everyone is committed to fulfilling the national desire to make it into the top 16, adding that in his view the level of the team has reached acceptable levels. The coach emphasized his role in the remaining 30-days before the May 31st kickoff was to get the squad 100 percent ready, and expressed satisfaction that there was an overall stabilization in the performance of the team both physically and tactically. The Dutchman said that the team will stay together for the next month during which time he will work on "details" and improve and fine tune every aspect of his squad and players.
