'NK Must be Ready to Abandon Nukes'

A senior government official says North Korea must be ready to completely abandon its nuclear ambitions before it agrees to hold discussions on Seoul’s “grand bargain" proposal.

Presidential secretary for national security strategy, Kim Tae-hyo, made the statement in an interview with YTN cable news channel on Wednesday.

Kim said it will not be enough if North Korea comes to the negotiating table to discuss what it can get from the international community while hiding key elements of its nuclear programs.

Kim said a stern message to the North will likely emerge from the upcoming South Korea-U.S. summit, stressing that Pyongyang needs to change its views on the grand bargain proposal. He said the bargain, which centers on a sweeping denuclearization accompanied by a comprehensive compensation package, could be of great help to Pyongyang’s future.
