Report: Business as Usual for Sanctioned NK Firms

A Japanese daily says North Korean firms that are subject to U.N. sanctions for allegedly being involved in nuclear weapons transactions are continuing to carry out operations as normal.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Thursday that the confirmation was made by a report drafted by U.N. experts.

The report said that the Korea Mining Development Corporation, which is one of the firms subject to U.N. sanctions, is continuing to ship out materials related to ballistic missiles through a subsidiary.

The paper added that only a few countries are carrying out U.N.-mandated cargo inspections on North Korean ships and are implementing sanctions ordered by the U.N. on the communist state.

The report comes a few days after another Japanese daily, the Yomiuri Shimbun, said North Korean organizations and individuals outside of those on a U.N. sanctions blacklist are secretly exporting and importing cargo related to missiles and nuclear arms on behalf of the sanctioned firms.

Currently, eight North Korean firms and five individuals are subject to the U.N. sanctions.
