'NK Currency Reform Still Jolting Market'

Chaos in the North Korean marketplace and among the people reportedly continues one week following Pyongyang’s currency revaluation.

Citing civic group officials in South Korea, the Tokyo Shimbun daily also said that a rising number of students in downtown Pyongyang are unable to attend school due to hunger.

The report said the chaos lingering one week after the currency reform is due to the authorities’ inability to set new price levels for food and wages.

Yomiuri Shimbun also cited major problems due to undetermined price levels for daily necessities such as rice, oil and train fare.

The revaluation makes the old denomination of one-thousand won worth ten won.
