Some 100 students taking an Asian American History course at an American university have submitted a petition to the U.S. government and President George W. Bush, in which they called for a formal apology for the Nogunri incident. The students wrote in the petition that the students of American Culture 314 course at the University of Michigan are aware that many Korean refugees were unjustly murdered at No Gun Ri in late July 1950. The students wrote in the petition.....that they also learned that the remaining survivors of the incident have been diligently sending petitions since 1994 without receiving just results. The students said...the incident cannot be described any more candidly than as a cruel murder of over 300 innocent Korean refugees. They said...many survivors not only have disfigured bodies from the incident, but also have a difficult time with their normal day-to-day activities, especially sleeping. Recalling that the previous Clinton administration acknowledged many innocent Korean refugees were killed or injured at the bridge of the small village in Yeongdong-gun, North Chungchong Province, South Korea, the petitioners said they feel "mere regret is not enough."
