South Korea says Pyongyang told U.S. special representative for North Korea policy Stephen Bosworth that the United Nations’ sanctions on the North are unjust.
South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Yu Myung-hwan said Wednesday that the North has claimed on multiple occasions that the U.N. sanctions that were placed on the North for its rocket launch earlier in the year are unjustified. The North says the launch was part of the peaceful development of its space program.
Yu said Pyongyang has been continuously claiming that the U.S. must abandon its so-called hostile policies before North Korea returns to the six-party talks.
However, Yu said the five other parties to the negotiations share the position that there will be no rewards for the North for merely returning to the six-way dialogue.
Overall, the foreign minister positively reviewed Bosworth’s visit to Pyongyang, namely the expressed joint understanding on the necessity and role of the six-party talks and the importance of implementing the September 19th joint statement.
